Sports

Sports photography is a specialty form of art, it requires many skills not found in other forms of photography.  When you master Sports Photography you can apply these new skills to your other forms of photography.

Sports Photography requires some of the following:
  • Through knowledge of your camera body capabilities.
  • Through understanding of your choice of lens.
  • Intimate knowledge of the sport.
  • How to anticipate action.
  • The very best spot to capture the action.
  • How to pre-set your camera and lens for the action coming in the next moment.
  • Time to make several captures in order to get the best photo.
When you have mastered the technical requirements of Sports Photography you can begin to perfect the composition of the image you wish to capture.

For "Stop Action" photos try some/or all of these suggestions:
  • ISO=400 (or faster)
  • Shutter Speed= 1/500 (or faster)
  • Aperture=/F-11 (or greater value)
  • 70 - 600mm zoom lens
  • Center of the playing field

Composition
The above illustration shows the ideal composition for action sports.  The red oval is the action taking place, and the green circle is the target of the action.

Consider the red oval a basketball player, and the green circle the basketball net.
