Comparisons Between Digital and Film

To compare Digital cameras and Film cameras becomes a matter of personal taste and economics.

When selecting a camera and the possible processing needed for your finished products you need to look at the overall expense for the lifetime of your images.

Film cameras will require the following examination of overall expense and productivity.
  • Camera cost,
  • film cost per roll.
  • Film processing (Development for each roll),
  • printing images, and re-prints (copies, or enlargements),
  • and distributing pictures to family and friends.
  • The type of film you will use.
  • Kodak Gold (print film.)
  • Kodak Ektachrome  (transparency, slide film).
  • The ISO (sensitivity to light rating)
  • The interchangeability of different films with different ISO ratings for available light.
  • How will you display your photos?
  • Print film can be shared by sending copies by "Snail Mail" to family and friends.
  • Slide (transparency) film must be shown through a projector device.
  • What can you do with the equipment and products when all is finished.
  • Not very much with film cameras, except purchase more film and processing.

Digital camera systems will need the same evaluations as a film camera.
  • Camera cost can be almost equal to film cameras.  It all depends on how you want to photograph in future months and years.
  • Once you decide on the digital camera there is no longer the need to purchase rolls of film.
  • No film processing, or printing at WalMart.
  • You will need a computer (desktop, or laptop) to post process your images, and share with family and friends.
  • Basic digital cameras normally come with controls to change the ISO while shooting images. (No need to change film rolls in mid shooting assignments.)
  • You will have no film type choices to make, all images will be in digital format.
  • How you display your pictures depends on your family and friends ability to receive and view digital images.  (Internet Service Provider (ISP), E-Mail, Web site host, and computer connected printer.
  • What can you do with the equipment when all is finished?
  • The computer equipment, with appropriate software can send images world wide through E-Mail, they can be added to personal web sites, and they can be printed like regular film prints.
  • The final choice is yours, digital photography offers the greatest overall choices and flexibility.
