Notes On The Crescendo Music Player Plugin

  1. The Crescendo Player is no longer available from LiveUpdate.com.  You may download the last version of Crescendo Free Player from the link below.
  2. You may test your browser before downloading at Crescendo Test, then press your back button to return.
  3. If you did not hear the music on the page you were viewing you can download the player for your web browser and Operating System at: Crescendo Download. 
  4. Installing the plugin depends on which Operating System you are using (Windows 95, 98SE, ME, 2000, or XP), and which web browser (Netscape Communicator 4.x, Netscape 7.0, Mozilla 1.4 - 1.8, or Internet Explorer 5 - 6 with Active X).
  5. For any other Operating System, or web browser not listed above consult your System Administrator for Plugin installations.
  6. From the Crescendo download page select the Crescendo (free) player, this link will take you to a selection of several Crescendo Players.
  7. Note: You may have the Crescendo Plugin for both Netscape and Internet Explorer, but you have to download and install the respective Crescendo versions for these web browsers.  You may also have installed Netscape Communicator and Netscape 7.x (these are two entirely different browsers), they can both be launched at the same time, but require the plugin to be installed into their respective Plugins Folder. 
  8. For Windows XP SP2 upgrades and new installations see notes at bottom of this page.

Installing Crescendo Plugins
For the purpose of these instructions we have to assume you installed the respective web browser into it's default installation path, if you custom installed the browser into your own unique path, on your Hard Drive, consult your System Administrator for the location of your browser Plugins Folder.

Important Notice.
Due to the recent Virus, Worm, and Trojan activity on the WWW some Anti-Virus, Firewalls, and Web Browsers are removing the file extensions from downloaded files to prevent automatic installations of malicious files.  If your downloaded file for Crescendo does not have the ".exe" at the end of the file name you will have to rename the file and add the .exe.

Locate your file with Windows Explorer, right click the files once, select "Rename", and add the .exe to the very end of the file.  Once the file is renamed you can then double click the new file name to install.
Mozilla 1.4 - 1.8
For Windows 95, 98SE, ME, 2000, and XP
From the Crescendo download page, download the plugin and install the downloaded file into:  C:\Program Files\Mozilla.org\Mozilla\Plugins.  The Crescendo downloaded file will be a compressed, self extracting, executable file.  With Windows Explorer navigate to the above path and double click the Crescendo downloaded file.  The install program should install all files into the above path, if you are asked where to install the extracted plugin files navigate to the above path and press "OK".
Netscape 7.x
For Windows 95, 98SE, ME, 2000, and XP
From the Crescendo download page, download the plugin and install the downloaded file into:  C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape7\Plugins.  The Crescendo downloaded file will be a compressed, self extracting, executable file.  With Windows Explorer navigate to the above path and double click the Crescendo downloaded file.  The install program should install all files into the above path, if you are asked where to install the extracted plugin files navigate to the above path and press "OK".
Netscape Communicator 4.x
For Windows 95, 98SE, ME, 2000, and XP
From the Crescendo download page, download the plugin and install the downloaded file into:  C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\Plugins.  The Crescendo downloaded file will be a compressed, self extracting, executable file.  With Windows Explorer navigate to the above path and double click the Crescendo downloaded file.  The install program should install all files into the above path, if you are asked where to install the extracted plugin files navigate to the above path and press "OK".
Required Files for Mozilla and Netscape
The following files are required in your "Plugins Folder".
  • CresObserver.class
  • CresPlayer.class
  • crestest.html
  • crest.mid
  • npmidi32.dll
  • npmp332.dll
To test your Crescendo Player with Netscape, or Mozilla navigate to your Plugins Folder with Windows Explorer, or Netscape/Mozilla browser, and double click on the "crestest.html" file.

In some installations where Netscape Communicator, Netscape 7.x, and Mozilla are installed Crescendo will install in only one "Plugins Folder", to get Crescendo tp play on the other browsers locate the file: "CresObserver.class".  With this file you will find all the above files, copy and paste the above files into your respective browser "Plugins Folder".  Close all browsers and re-open your browser to read the new plugin files.
Internet Explorer 5.x - 6.x (with Active-X)
For Windows 95, 98SE, ME, 2000, and XP
From the Crescendo download page, download the plugin and install the downloaded file into:  C:\My Download files.  The Crescendo downloaded file will be a compressed, self extracting, executable file.  With Windows Explorer navigate to the above path and double click the Crescendo downloaded file.  The installation file will find the location of the IE plugins folder and install all required plugin files for Internet Explorer.
You may be wondering why Internet Explorer is much easier to install plugins than Netscape, Internet Explorer has only one default location for all it's files.  Netscape has opted to allow separate folder locations for each of it's respective browser versions.  Netscape permits having each of it's browser versions installed and operating at the same time, Internet Explorer only allows the current version to be installed and operating.
Windows XP with SP2 where Windows XP is installed on a New PC.
Windows XP with SP2 may cause an error when installing Crescendo, this is caused by an incompatibility when Windows XP sp2 installs a DOS based program.  We have a work around to correct this problem.

First try downloading and installing Crescendo Max Universal 5.1, if this still causes a problem try the steps below.
  1. Open Windows Explorer (right click your start button and select Explorer) and navigate to: C:\WINDOWS\REPAIR
  2. In the right panel press and hold the Ctrl button and with the left mouse button select autoexec.nt and config.nt.
  3. Once the two files are selected press the right mouse button and select copy from the drop down menu.
  4. From the Windows Explorer navigation panel navigate to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32.
  5. With the mouse highlight the System32 folder, then right click the folder and select Paste.
  6. Close Explorer and reboot your system, then reinstall Crescendo.

Windows XP with SP2 where Windows XP is an upgrade from an earlier version of Windows
If you upgrade from an earlier version of the Windows Operating System (Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4) to Windows XP PRO with SP2 you may receive errors from Windows similar to the following:
"Mozilla.exe Entry Point Not Found. The procedure entry point ThunkConnect 32 could not be located in the dynamic link library Kernell32.dll ".  Mozilla.exe is the program trying to call Crescendo through the ThunkConnect32 Windows 16bit to 32bit compiler.  The fix for this problem is outlined below.
  1. With Mozilla (Netscape) completely closed, including Quick Launch in the System Quick Launch Bar (next to the clock) follow the next 6 steps.
  2. Open Start/Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs and remove all Crescendo programs.
  3. With Windows Explorer navigate to your Mozilla (Netscape) profile and delete all Crescendo files found in the Plugins folder.
  4. If you have more than one Mozilla (Netscape) profile you need to remove all Crescendo files in those Plugin folders as well.
  5. Download and install Crescendo Max Universal 5.1.
  6. You may return to this page and test Crescendo, or in your Mozilla (Netscape) Plugins folder click on the Crescendo Test file "crestest.html".
